Who
Hi there,
Thanks for taking the time to have a look around my Baja build up website.
As you may know my name in the Baja circles is Bronze but my actual name is Steve Williams.
I feel that since you and I are on this journey together, creating this Baja called Bunyip I should share a little of myself.
I was first introduced to Volkswagens when I was asked to rewire a Type III for a mate of mine Brad in Queensland where I grew up. In fact now I think of it another friend of mine Allan also had a Type III which was also a square back but we used to puch that around his yard with his brothers pretending to drive it as 13 or 14 year olds. Anyhow later when I was about 16, Brad asked me to rewire his Type III for rego and after a day of creating basic circuits and testing relays we got it through rego.
After that I met a very lovely young lady Jenny who was looking to buy a Kombi. We traveled much of Queensland looking for a rust free camper that hadn’t been trashed by back packers only to find one in our own back yard. After doing some minor mechanical repairs of that my appreciation grew for the VW motif and the simplicity to which the Germans engineered this unique little form of transport.
As a student I had a wood work teacher who came and went from work in a Green J&S Beach Buggy and so with envy I promised myself that one day, each time he drove past me that I would one day also own my own buggy. The opportunity has come and gone several times but there is never a good time to buy a buggy. Perhaps in retirement
When I was a Uni-student I needed reliable transportation that didn’t cost a bomb but I could still get out in the bush with my family and yet repair it when need be. Of course the Beetle is the tried and true option but what about the off-road part. Well thats where the Baja comes into its own.
A Baja, properly maintained and set up will follow most stock four wheel vehicles through the most inhospitable terrain imaginable. Whether they come out is another story but let me tell you there is nothing more exciting and rewarding than working together to get your car beck from over a dune, out of a hole, back onto the seal and moving forward again in the mud.
Like anything they cannot go anywhere but they can go a lot further than most 60k Range Rovers and BMW’s and the beauty is I don’t have to worry about the scratches.
Compared to most fanatics I haven’t done all the modifications, owned all the accessories and conquered every buggy track but I enjoy working on and joining in with the like minded gent that meet at Stockton every so often for a chat and a drive around one of Australia’s most beautiful sand pits.
I hope you enjoy and return again to our site. Please take the time to leave a comment.
Warm regards
The Bronze.
